Canine Massage - Mary Kennedy

PSYCHIATRIC SERVICE DOGS

I recently had the privilege of working with a group of psychiatric service dogs and their handlers. These are people with PTSD, bipolar, panic disorders and depression, that have uniquely trained canines to assist them in living as normal a life as possible. In the class we worked with breathing more deeply, applying energy work on the dogs and finishing with gentle canine massage. The premise of this work is to calm both partners. As the people looked around the room to see the dogs all lying down, relaxed, they were amazed. I then asked, “How do YOU feel?” The response was, “We are so much more relaxed.” The new process below is a description of a new process I am offering. It is far more in depth than what I offer in a class environment. It is meant to be a deep exploration and trauma release that is facilitated one on one.

HEALING THE HUMAN AND CANINE TEAM
I am a certified Transformational Breathwork facilitator as well as an animal wellness consultant and animal massage provider. Because humans and their companion animals are very connected emotionally and spiritually, there is great potential for healing both. Using the skills I have learned, I developed a healing technique called THE TRANSFORMATIONAL TEAM PROCESS.

As a Canine Massage Provider, I began working with psychiatric service dogs and recognized a strong connection and mirror effect in this powerful working team. For instance, when the dog is agitated, very likely, the human is agitated. I could see the potential for healing the “team”, by having the human partner apply energy work and superficial massage to the canine. How many times have you witnessed a massage only to find yourself relaxing? By teaching some basic energy work skills and gentle massage techniques to anyone with a companion animal, the practice will begin to calm both the human and the animal simply because there is a reciprocal action taking place.

In a TRANSFORMATIONAL TEAM PROCESS session, we begin with conscious, connected breathing into the belly while being physically connected to the animal, and synchronizing the breath with the animal. The breathwork will help to quiet the mind and access the higher consciousness. I then guide the human into applying calming and connecting energy work on the animal, and finally move into gentle massage. In this very intimate facilitated journey, one can delve deeply into the thoughts and emotions of the animal. It is a profound, transformational experience that brings relaxation, clarity, and emotional connection.

There is a reason we have particular animals in our lives. With THE TRANSFORMATIONAL TEAM PROCESS we can go beneath the superficial layers of emotion and discover more about ourselves through our “little mirrors”. We can learn to calm anxiety and move through depression by taking this special relationship a step farther. We can also calm and comfort our four legged partners in the process.
