Is Your Dental Health Affecting your Overall Health?
If you value your overall health, go see a dentist! Studies
show that preventive dental care can help avoid health problems.
As a dentist who practices bio-compatible dentistry, I often
have patients ask me about how dental health relates to
physical health.
Do you experience any of these symptoms? They may signal
a silent medical condition and should be checked out by
your dentist:
* Bleeding gums or chronic halitosis may be the first signs
of harmful bacteria in your mouth. This can enter your blood
stream and travel to major organs and cause damage or cause
you to have a sore, painful jaw. It can even lead to heart
problems and strokes.
* Bad breath, bleeding gums or a dry mouth (which can also
cause increased tooth decay) may lead to Diabetes.
* Receding gums and bone loss around teeth (bone loss can
be detected through dental x-rays) or if your dentures become
loose or ill-fitting can indicate osteoporosis or its onset.
Did you know that the average person swallows 2,000 times
per day? Each time, the upper and lower teeth come together
and brace the jaw against the skull. If you have a poorly
aligned bite or are missing teeth, your jaw muscles must
work harder to bring your teeth together. This strain can
cause orofacial pain. You can feel it in your ears, eyes,
sinuses, cheeks or side of your head. You might also experience
clicking when moving your jaw. Orofacial pain could also
be caused by nerve disorders, temperomandibular (TMJ) disorders,
stress, or muscle spasms. Serious causes of orofacial pain
include tumors in the jawbone area, oral cancer or referred
pain from cardiac disease.
See your dentist at the first sign of orofacial pain or
noted abnormality when closing your mouth.
Suffer from chronic headaches? Most headaches are caused
by muscle tension and may be related to your bite. Your
headache may have a dental origin if you experience any
of the following:
* Pain behind your eyes
* Sore or tired jaw muscles, esp. upon waking
* Teeth Grinding
* Clicking or popping jaws
If you suspect your headaches might be caused by your bite,
see your dentist. If they determine dental stress is the
source of your pain, they will help you correct your bite
so that the muscles can function without extra strain and
tension.
