Healthy oils for better eyesight

Certain fats and oils may help protect the eyes from aging, according to a recently completed epidemiological study. The study shows that the incidence of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD—the leading cause of severe visual loss in people over age 50) is reduced in those who consume fish. In the study, more than 3,600 people aged 49 and over completed a detailed food questionnaire. A higher frequency of fish consumption was associated with a decreased incidence of ARMD. It was also found that people with very high levels of cholesterol intake were more likely to have ARMD. Some researchers recommend fish oil supplements or, for vegetarians, flaxseed oil.
