Dietary antioxidants protect better than supplements

A recent science advisory from the American Heart Association (AHA) concludes that antioxidant supplements offer little protection against cardiovascular disease, and that antioxidants in foods are more effective in preventing and treating disease.
An AHA panel of experts reviewed research between 1994 and 2002 on the link between antioxidants and heart disease, and noted that a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and lean protein offered protection. “We know that diets high in fruits and vegetables are associated with decreased risk of cardiovascular disease,” said Penny Kris-Etherton, lead author of the panel that wrote the advisory and a professor of Nutrition at Pennsylvania State University. “At this time, there is little reason to advise that individuals take antioxidant supplements to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease.”
