Tooth whiteners may be linked to oral cancer

In a small study conducted at Georgetown University, researchers noted that people who use tooth whiteners were more likely to get metastatic lymph nodes. While the study did not establish a conclusive link, it did raise questions. Researchers noted that carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide in tooth whiteners cause local inflammation and mucosal trauma. The effect on tissues of this inflammatory response is not yet known, but may be linked to an increased cancer risk.
