Low folate levels linked to depression

Some new evidence suggests that folate, a B vitamin, might be linked to depression. It is known that low folate levels are common in psychiatric patients and may decrease the effectiveness of antidepressant therapy. Now, a new study of 3,000 people aged 15 to 39 years found that those with major or mild depression had lower blood levels of folate than did those who had never been depressed. Food sources of folate include liver, green leafy vegetables, beans and enriched grain products. Folate also plays an important role in preventing heart disease and neural tube defects in newborns.
