Iron deficiency reduces cell activity

A new study shows that a deficiency of iron—the most common and severe nutritional disorder—forces cells to dramatically reduce their activity in order to preserve iron stores. According to the study, iron deprivation ³reprograms the metabolism of the entire cell and changes how cellular processes occur. This can affect certain aspects of energy production, aging and free-radical protection. Many symptoms of iron deficiency, including fatigue, weakness, cognitive disorders, developmental disorders and heart problems, may go unrecognized. Multivitamin supplements that contain iron may help prevent deficiencies; other sources of iron include red meat, shellfish, spinach, dried fruits and seeds.
