Citrus compounds reduce cancer risk

Citrus fruit, known to contain a number of anti-cancer compounds, may help reduce the risk of certain cancers, according to new research. In a recent study, researchers found that limonoids, compounds that are unique to citrus fruit, were able to halt the progression of certain cancer cells and, in some cases, even kill the cells. Specifically, citrus limonoids were able to target and stop neuroblastomas, malignant tumours composed of undeveloped nerve cells. These occur mainly in infants and young children and usually manifest as solid tumours in the neck, chest, spinal cord or adrenal glands. Unlike most anti-cancer drugs, limonoids are non-toxic and have no side effects.
