Beans, nuts and grains inhibit tumor growth

A new study has found that a compound in some foods helps block or slow tumor growth. Found primarily in beans, nuts and grains, the compound‹inositol pentakisphosphate‹inhibits an enzyme called phosphoinositide 3-kinase, which is involved in forming new blood vessels that facilitate a tumor’s development and progression. In the study, researchers found that inositol pentakisphosphate inhited tumor growth in animals; they also found that it enhanced the action of cancer drugs on ovarian and lung cancer cell cultures. Additionally, the naturally occuring compound was found to be non-toxic, even at very high concentrations. Researchers emphasized the importance of a diet that includes ample amounts of beans, nuts and whole grains.
