Pomegranate protects against arthritis
Compounds from pomegranates can block enzymes that contribute to osteoarthritis, a painful disease characterized by cartilage deterioration. In a recent study, researchers examined the effect of a pomegranate extract on interleukin-1b, a protein that causes an overproduction of inflammatory molecules, including enzymes that contribute to cartilage deterioriation. The study found that pomegranate extract prevented the expression of these enzymes. The study ’ s authors also suggested that in addition to preventing osteoarthritis from worsening, pomegranate may also help maintain joint integrity and function. Pomegranate has antioxidant properties and has long been used for its medicinal properties; some studies have also suggested that pomegranate may reduce the risk of cancer.
